Braised Pork Shoulder Health Benefits
As the name suggests, the meat of Pork Shoulder comes from a pig’s shoulder – which is the part right in front of the pig’s front legs. Since this part is involved in a lot of activity, this meat contains less fat, but has a lot more flavor and is a relatively healthier choice of pork. Pork shoulder has comparatively more amount of fat though, when compared to pork loin. This meat is also called ‘picnic shoulder’, or ‘picnic roast’.
Pork shoulder is the best when it is braised, but also can
be cut up when making a stew or can be used to make ground pork. It is though, a bit of a tedious task if you
choose to roast this type of pork, as there needs to be liquid constantly, when
you are roasting it.
The one catch that pork shoulder meat has is that it turns out to be a pretty tough meat to cut into if it is not cooked properly.
Pork shoulder is usually available to buy, with the skin
unremoved from the meat, so it is always best to make sure that you remove the
skin, if that is something that you do not like to include while cooking. While
pork shoulder is a healthy option to want to cook at home, what needs to be
kept in mind is that it cooks slowly, and it is best when cooked slowly, so
that the fat melts, and the meat tenderizes.
