All You Need to Know About Obesity

causes, tips and risks of obesity

In the current generation, because of our food habits, a lot of people in the world are suffering from obesity. From the outside, obesity looks like being overweight, but obesity is far more complicated than just being overweight.

What is Obesity?

Obesity is considered as "A disorder that is caused due to excessive body fat".

People who are obese have a body mass index of over 30, which causes problems like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, all of which leads to death, if not treated at the right time. Obesity takes a lot of time to be treated, but with the right treatment, and right kind of precautions, it is never too late to be cautious.

Causes of Obesity

1) Diet

It is always important to maintain a proper diet that contains all the essential nutrients, proteins and vitamins, that help maintain the overall health of our body. The lack of essential foods, and the consumption of high energy density foods such as bread, pasta, pastries, and fast food can result in weight gain, and eventually, obesity.

2) Emotional Eating

We tend to eat a lot when we are emotionally stressed or bored. We most often tend to eat a lot of sugary foods and comfort foods, which are good on the tongue, but very bad for the health.

3) Sleeping Habits

Irregular sleeping habits, or the lack of sleep thereof, can both result in a change in your weight. Due to irregular sleeping habits, we will experience hormonal changes in our bodies, which adversely affect our hunger and appetite. If this continues for a longer period of time, it can affect our metabolism, ultimately resulting in obesity.

4) Genes

Research says that there are as many as 400 genes in the world, that naturally contribute to obesity. Such genes can influence factors such as appetite, metabolism, food cravings, satiety, emotional eating, and body fat distribution in the body. Moreover, depending on person to person, the genetic influence on obesity can range from 25% to 80%.

5) Eating Frequency

A lot of people think that eating less will help with weight loss. However, the fact is that eating three to four small meals, with the right kind of nutrients and proteins is so much healthier than eating just two to three meals. Eating less can actually result in obesity.

Treatment for Obesity

1) Diet Changes

We should always make sure that we have proper food, that includes all the necessary vitamins and proteins that our body needs. This not only keeps us fit but also keeps us healthy on an overall basis. It is also important the amount of calorie intake per day, to a minimum of 1000-500 calories.

2) Exercise

Depending upon the type of your body, different kinds of exercise are recommended for different people. Working out regularly can have a very positive effect on your body. However, exercise should also be done with supervision, and not just blindly. Something as simple as walking or taking the stairs will also greatly impact your health.

3) Reduced Stress

Stress can cause a person to naturally put-on weight, even if they do not want to. Stressing a lot can result in obesity. Always make sure to keep your stress levels to the bare minimum and try to come up with a practice to help lower your stress.

Diseases Caused by Obesity

1) Type-2 Diabetes

This type of diabetes is caused when your body cells are unable to respond to the insulin in your body. This is because there is a lot of glucose and sugar in the bloodstream. This can cause serious health issues, as the amount of insulin in your body falls short when compared to the amount of sugar.

2) Heart Diseases

Many heart diseases are caused due to obesity, such as Arrhythmia (an irregular heartbeat), Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), Cardiomyopathy (heart muscles harden or grown weak), etc.

3) High Blood Pressure

When you are overweight, or obese, the pressure of the blood goes beyond its ideal point. It also reduces the body’s ability to transport blood to all the necessary parts in the body, possibly even resulting in a heart attack.

4) Certain Cancers

Obesity can result in a number of cancers like Meningioma (cancer in the tissue covering the brain and spinal cord), Thyroid, Liver, Gallbladder, Upper Stomach, Pancreas, Ovary, and Kidney. However, obesity is predominantly known to cause Breast cancer, colon cancer and endometrial cancer.

Obesity can result in the above diseases, all of which have a great chance of resulting in death. Proper regulation of our health, and with the right kind of attention to our lifestyle, will prevent us from risking any potential threats to our body and health.
