8 Signs of Mental Illness

8 signs of mental illness

The way the current generation is succumbing to mental illness needs not to be stated more than it already is being. Mental illness is an issue that not many people are taking seriously, despite the serious effects that it has on people and its very shocking outcomes. Mental awareness programs need to be conducted more often, to increase the awareness of the issue, and to make sure that people do not look at it as a taboo anymore.

While some people resort to several ways that can make them mentally strong, many others cannot do so. Some do not even ask for help, which is why we all need to be very much aware and sensitive towards others.

People who are suffering from mental illness usually show a few warning signs, that might lead you to understand that they are suffering. It is very important for all of us to be aware of these signs, and to help others, as part of our social responsibility.

1) Changes in Appetite and Sleep

Sleep and appetite are the first and foremost things that get affected when a person is not emotionally strong. They either tend to eat more or tend to eat less. Similarly, they either tend to sleep too much or too little. They only function in extremes, with no middle ground. This is a major red flag, which when left unchecked can cause a lot of severe problems.

2) Frequent Mood Swings

Feelings and emotions are at a very heightened point when a person is not emotionally strong. This tends to make them prone to frequent mood swings, which causes them a lot of discomforts. They can go from being very happy to utterly devastated in two seconds, and that is something that needs to be taken seriously.

3) Social Withdrawal

When a person is not emotionally themselves, they would not want to socialize or mingle with anyone. And with the lack of any sort of social activity, they are prone to more feelings of sadness and depression.

4) Tend to Function Less

Our emotions play a very vital role in us being able to function properly. When our emotions are off, our physical life and our functioning will also suffer as a result. When a person is not interested in doing anything – especially something they normally love doing – it is a major sign that the person is suffering.

5) Problems of Thinking Ability

Thinking does not only refer to mentally trying to reason something, but it also includes being able to focus and concentrate on something long enough to be able to complete doing it. When someone experiences problems with concentrating and focusing on something, it might mean that they are not themselves anymore

6) Nervousness

Emotional vulnerability often translates into not being as confident as you once were. This causes a lot of nervousness and self-doubt in an individual. Even for the most trivial of things, an individual might feel incredibly nervous, when they would not have felt normally so, on other days.

7) Become Apathetic

Apathy is a major red flag when it comes to mental health issues. This is because when someone refrains from doing something they usually used to love, it means that something is definitely off. Unless there is a substantial reason, a person would naturally not want to do something that they really love doing.

8) Irrational Thinking

It is natural for everyone to skip from one thought to another. However, if these thoughts take weird and crazy directions, to the point of delusional, the person might be in need of some help.
